THANKSGIVING DAY + BLACK FRIDAY (OPEN SEASON HOLLIDAYS)

Thanksgiving Day,
is a holiday celebrated in the United States
on the fourth Thursday in November.
It has officially been an annual tradition since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,
(preces e graças  ao senhor que provem todas as graças)
to be  celebrated on Thursday, November 26.
As a federal and popular holiday in the U.S.,
Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays  of the year.
Together with Christmas and the New Year,
Thanksgiving is a part of  the broader
holiday season (calendario oficial de  festejos).

Black Friday

is the name given to the day following
(dia seguinte)  Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionallythe beginning of the Christmas shoppingseason.
On this day, most major retailers open extremely early, (maioria  dos grandes lojistas/ varejistas abrem as portas cedinho) often at 4 am, or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off (inicio das vendas) the holiday shopping season.
Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many non-retail employers (empregados terceirizados são contratados) also observe this day as a holiday along with Thanksgiving,
giving their employees the day off,  thereby increasing (com isso  encrementa)
the number of potential shoppers.
The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic
which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.
Use of the term started before 1961; later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates  the point at which retailers
begin to turn a profit,(indica  que  os varejistas irão liquidar  tudo)  or are "in the black".

Personnal Presentations

Hi Supers!

I have giving some Classes about how to produce an efficient Personnal Presentation in English.
Some of my students asked it, and they said me that they really have a huge problems when they face up it.
Mostly os them, said me that the cause of a poor presentation is: Shyness or a poor vocabulary. But in my opinion it´s a question of: take a time and think about the subject.
This is how can you schedule and prepare a confident and satisfatory personnal presentation:

8 Steps:

1- Identificate:   I  am  Nilton Inacyo   (must be informal, naturally).

2 - Age and marital status:
I am 47yo and married;
I am 22 yo and single, but I am dating now.
I am married and have one kid; 3 years old...

3 - Place to live:
I live in São Paulo, born in Rio de Janeiro.

4 - Familiar Informations:
My father is a mecanic and my mother is housewife and retired.

I studied in public school.
I interruped my graduation in 2009....
At the moment I am not studing.
I don´t work at the moment.
I am sending resumés and interviews for job.
I am working in a familar job.

6 - Like and dislikes:
I have interrest in computing, cooking.....
I like to watch TV, Sports and read.
I enjoy to practice sports in my free-time.
I usually to dedicate my free-time writing and organize my home.
I appreciate to make some short travels and community services.

7 - Strong and weakness point about your personality:
My strongest point is: My dedication. I am very neat and concentrate. I am calm and organized. Friendly; I am very sociable and easygoing.
I use to be a hard-mind and serious.
Sometimes I use to be excited to finish and conclude my tasks.

8 - Goals:  (plans and dreams in future).
I have thinking about to return to study again.
I am foccusing in my graduation.
I would like to conclude to pay my house mortigage.
I am thinking about change my car for a new ones.
I am planning to get married next year.
I am saving money to trip to América.
I am going to retro-fit my house and have a baby....

Good luck!  but remember: the secret is: keep calm, try to summarize and be clear in your speech.

1 - We need to hurry up if we wanna catch up that bus.
It was your guilty, because you woke up late, and I had waited for you.

_____________________________________________________

2 - Hold on here.  I will check up if is there somebody to help us.
Before you get out, don´t forget to throw way the garbage and turn off all home`s lights.

______________________________________________________

3 - So sorry, tonight I can`t ask out with you. About 6pm I will have to pick up my son at school,  swing by to supermarket to buy something to dinner.  At night, I must study to attend for a test tomorrow morning and look after the boy.  If I won´t be so tired I will have to tide up my dorm     and sweep up the carpet.

_______________________________________________________

4 - I have to call off my appointment with the dentist this noon. Probably I will have to take part a meeting with my bosses and a supplier chain.   I need to look up his contact on the internet and  find out a good restaurant to book the lunch.
_______________________________________________________

5 - I stayed wrapped up all this morning, try to figured out a solution for the bills accounting.
I had seen through all my papers, looked into all accounts to fix up the mistake that they did.  So, I had to make over all the reports and printed them before to send up them.

 _______________________________________________________

6 - I was almost giving up when I found out a solution.  After that, I passed out the e-mail for all departments; drown up the new strategies and new rules for the New Fiscal Year.

_________________________________________________________

7 - Next week, I will have some kick off meetings about the new project. It will burn me down 2 or 3 days in the week. So, I will call off my English classes. I should have to spell out many intructions  to my staff board and tide up all stuffs to these meetings before I set up with them.                                                                 I know that will be a stressful week!!!

__________________________________________________________

8 - I arrived today late, because I staid hold off by the Metro.  As you know, Metro in São Paulo is
super crowed in the mornings. Some moments I almost felt by passengers;  When I filled in my way, I had dropped by to bakery to buy something to the breakfast.  I use to have my breakfast at the office all mornings.

___________________________________________________________

9 - Please try on this buffet salad. It`s terrific! I am thinking about to set up a diet. I have to cut off some fat and caloric foods from my diet. The problem is: I always ran into the temptation to eat sweets and chocolates every time.  I have to give up been a sock potato and start up make gym or work out after my job.  I am a kind of lazy person, and disgust the idea about dress up that gym apperals and attend by 2 or 3 times a week into a club or academy gym with that pump up people running, sweeping and fitness all the time.   It is to awful for me!

___________________________________________________________

10 - Congrats you if you have arrived here and got it!  I think now, you are a right to get in through. Viva!

LIZ OUR QUEEN

2012 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
Entire this year will take place many celebrations and venues
to celebrate this Jubilee.
She has reigned for the past 60 years.

She took the throne in february 1952.
She is the second British monarch who will celebrate such a
big event.                                                                                                                     The other monarch was Queen Victoria (1897).
For this year’s celebrations the Queen and her husband

Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh), the famous royal couple
Prince William and Kate Middleton and other members of the
royal family have been touring England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales as well as other overseas regions.
Bank and school holidays have also been set to mark

this grand event.
Many pageants, fundraisers and lunches have also been

organized to support it.
A few days ago, the Queen along with the Duke of Edinburgh

visited the Manchester Town Hall. As part of the Diamond Jubilee
celebrations, they attended a lunch hosted by the Lord Mayor.
There were many well-wishers who came just to
catch a glimpse of her.  They patriotically stood outside the town
all, cheering and waving as the monarchs waved at them.
The Queen and her husband became surprise guests of honor

during their wedding.
The monarchs even posed for photos with the couple

who decided to set their wedding in spite of the scheduled Jubilee
events. They were aware of the celebrations but they booked the
venue before the visit was announced.
Now some curiosities and peculiar behaviors about Elizabeth

How to call the Queen when you are going to salute hers:
  Your Highest!
- Never let your hands in her direction.
- If you call for toast or cheers up you must wait she drinks first.
- Nobody set out from the table before hers.
- The Queen always is let drive alone in her Official Car.
- She has got 2 pet dogs.
- She always wakes up by herself. It´s is totally prohibiting wake up hers.
- She always uses hats on her public appearances.
- She loves gray and green colors for clothes and red shoes.
- Elizabeth doesn´t eat or drink anything before a royal assistant taste it.

EASTER TIMES! VIVA THE SAVIOR! or just a Commercial hollidays??

Easter (Pascoa) is the holiday marking the rebirth (marca o re-nascimento) of Jesus and the renewal of the Christian faith.

It is a blessed time for the faithful (fé) to celebrate the life, death and resurrection of the Savior... and a magical time for children to enjoy  (curtir muito) chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks and jellybean-filled Easter eggs.

Easter is the commemoration of Jesus' resurrection, universally celebrated by Christians around the world. Although (entretanto)how and even when Easter is celebrated varies greatly.

Both Western Churches (igrejas) (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and Eastern Churches (Greek and Russian Orthodox) celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. (final do inverno-hesmifério norte)

There are as many as five weeks between the two Easter celebrations.
In the Western Church, Easter falls between late March and late April;
in the Orthodox Church, it is between early April and early May.

In the 16th century, the Roman Church abandoned the Julian Calendar in favor of the Gregorian calendar. As a result, Catholic (and eventually Protestant) churches need to convert the originally Julian-based date of Easter into a Gregorian date.  Even still, it would stand to reason that the date would be the same (poderia ser a mesma) for the two Churches, since both are based on the same Julian calendar-at least originally.

However, the two Churches also use a different system for calculating the date of the vernal equinox.

The Western Church decided to set a fixed date-March 21-for the vernal equinox and then define the full moon using ecclesiastical calculations.

The Orthodox Church, on the other hand, set the date for Easter based on the astronomical definitions of the full moon and the equinox, as they are observed along the meridian of Jerusalem.

While the Easter date debate is the most commonly cited difference between Eastern and Western Christianity, there are many other differences, as well. From the timing and content of the Easter Mass to traditional foods served at Easter, the two Churches bring their own unique take on celebrating Easter. For more on how Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox celebrate Easter,

Now i am available:

Greetings Nilton!

We are glad that you like the CDLP online site.
It is used quite a lot by students all over the world.

****  You might want to also check out USALearns.org. It has USA in the name but is also free and open to anyone. There are three ESL courses on the site, Begining ESL, Intermediate ESL, and Practice English and Reading. The last one is based on the CDLPonline content but has additional activities. Another advantage is that teachers can create a course and have their students register in it in order to track their progress.

There are 3 sites with USALearns. The address listed above is for Independent Learners - those without teachers or tutors who wish to improve their English skills. If, after looking at the site, you would like your students to do the activities AND be able to track their progress, you will need to go to the Teacher site and setup a class. After you setup a class then the students will register on the Student site.

If you would like instructions on how to access and setup a Teacher account along with student registration instructions, let me know.

VERY IMPORTANT:
If a student registers at the Independent Learner site, they will NOT be able to register in your class if you create one.

I hope all of this makes sense. Please feel free to email if you have questions.
Our offices will be cloased from December 24th through January 1st.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday season!

CARNIVAL IS COMING: THE GREATEST PARTY IN THE WORLD - BRAZIL

The Carnival of Brazil  is an annual festival held [acontece]forty-six days before Easter. On certain days of Lent,[quaresma] Roman Catholics and some other Christians traditionally abstained from the consumption of meat and poultry [comer carne e aves], hence the term "carnival," from carnelevare, "to remove meat."
Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the pagan [originaria das festas pagãs] festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to practice repentance and prepare for Christ's death and resurrection.
Rhythm, participation, and costumes vary from one region of Brazil to another.
In the southeastern cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, huge organized parades are led by samba schools.
Those official parades are meant to be watched by the public, while minor parades ("blocos") allowing public participation can be found in other cities.

The northeastern cities of Salvador, Porto Seguro and Recife have organized groups parading through streets, and public interacts
directly with them.
This carnival is also influenced by African-Brazilian culture. It's a six days party where crowds follow the trios elétricos through the city streets, dancing and singing.
Also in northeast, Olinda carnival features unique characteristics, part influenced by Venice Carnival mixed with cultural depictions of local folklore.
The typical genres of music of brazilian carnival are, in Rio de Janeiro (and Southeast Region in general): the samba-enredo, the samba de bloco, the samba de embalo and the marchinha; in Pernambuco and Bahia (and Northeast Region in general) the main genres are: the frevo, the maracatu, the samba-reggae and Axé music.
Carnaval is the most famous holiday in Brazil and has become an event of huge proportions.
The country stops completely for almost a week and festivities are intense, day and night, mainly in coastal cities.
The consumption of beer accounts for 80% of annual consumption and tourism receives 70% of annual visitors. The government distributes condoms and launches awareness campaigns at this time to prevent the spread of AIDS.
Rio de Janeiro's carnival alone drew 4.9 million people in 2011, with 400,000 being foreigners.

THIS IS RADITION HAVE BEEN CELEBRATION THROUGH MANY CENTURIES.
NOW IN 2012 IS THE DRAGON´S YEAR.

DRAGON: full of vitality and enthusiasm! The dragon is a popular individual even with the reputation of taking foolish risks and “a big mouth” at times.
You are intelligent, gifted and perfectionist but these qualities make you unduly demanding on others. You would be well-suited to be artist, priest and politician.
Remember one thing: As dragons, unicorns and phoenix-eagles these are fictionaries animals.
They were created by some civilizations and don´t exist at all.
Do you believe them?
